History of Early Childhood Education

  • Jan 1, 1483

    Martin Luther

    From 1483-1546 Martin Luther translated the Bible from Latin to vernacular language, allowing people to be educated in their own language. He also advocated establishing schools to teach children how to read.
  • John Cornenius

    From 1592-1670 John Cornenius wrote Orbis Pictus, the first picture book for children. He thought early experiences formed what a child would be like. He said education should occur through the senses.
  • Friedrich Froebel

    From 1782-1852 Friedrich Froebel beliveved children developed through unfolding. He compared children to growing plants. He founded the kindergarten or the " Garden of children " developed gifts and occupations to help young children learn. He believed children can and should learn through play.
  • John Dewey

    From 1859-1952 John Dewey helped start the progressive education movement. He beliveved childrens intrerests form the basis of the curriculum. He also thought we should educate children for today not tomorrow.
  • Maria Montessori

    From 1870-1952 Maria Montessori formed the montessori method for educating young children. She thought all knowlege comes intrinsically from sensory experiences. She used learning materials to meet the needs of young children. She was big on sensory based materials that are self correcting. She belived prepared enviroments are essential for learning and that respect for children is the foundation of teaching.
  • Erik Erikson

    From 1902-1994 Erik Erikson's theory of psychosocial development congnitive development occurs in conjunction with social development. He thought life is a series of eight stages with each stage representing a critical period in social development. He belived it was important how parents and teachers interact with and care for children helps determine their emotional and cognitive development.
  • Abraham Maslow

    From 1908-1970 Abraham Maslow had a theroy of self actualization based on needs motivation. He thought human development is a process of meeting basic needs throughout life. He belived in humanistic psychology.
  • Urie Bronfenbrenner

    From 1917-2005 Urie Bronfenbrenner ecological systems theory views the child as developing within a system of relationships. Each system influences and is influenced by the other. Development is influenced by children and their environments.
  • Sputnik

    In 1957 the soviet union lauched the first satellite Sputnik. In response to this national fear of losing world power, congress passed the National Defense Education Act of 1958. This provided federal funding for science, technology, engineering, math, and foreign language which is considred by many to be the start of federal standards in education.
  • Civil Rights Movement

    In the 1960s the civil rights movement permanently altered the course of education. With this movement the federal goverment became involved in ensuring education for all. The education amendments of the civil rights act are no called the Equal Opportunity in education act.
  • Teacher of the year

    Teacher of the year Laura Cynthia Murr Watkins philosophy is a child centered approach, which promotes childrens individuality, creative exploration, and active involvement she teaches the whole child which addresses the inellectual, emotional, physical, and social factors which all play a part in childrens learning.
