History of Computers

  • DRAM

    DRAM
Intel releases the Intel 1103, the first Dynamic Access Memory (DRAM) chip. The 1103 was the first commercially available DRAM and came to replace the less coss effective magnetic-core memory.
  • Microprocessor

    Microprocessor
Intel introduces the first commercially available microprocessor, the Intel 4004. Before microprocessors, computers were built using circuit boards with integrated circuits. A microprocessor incorporates the functions of a single processing unit on a single integrated circuit, greatly increasing the efficiency of processing power. The microprocessor was designed by Federico Faggin, Marcian Hoff, Stanley Mazor, and Masatoshi Shima
  • Floppy Disks

    Floppy Disks
Alan Shugart leads a team of IBM engineers to invent the floppy disk, a precursor to the flash drive. It allowed data to be shared amongst computers.
  • Ethernet

    Ethernet
Bob Metcalfe develops ethernet. Ethernet is a local area technology which allows for the connection of devices in close proximity. Without ethernet, data would have to be conveyed through a dial-up connection. Ethernet has truly revolutionized the way we use, consume, and send data.
  • Apple II Model

    Apple II Model
The Apple company releases its Apple II model. The Apple II is one of the first highly successful mass-produced microcomputer products. Many argue that the Apple II popularized personal computers because it was so well marketed to the average consumer.
