DRAM
Intel releases the Intel 1103, the first Dynamic Access Memory (DRAM) chip. The 1103 was the first commercially available DRAM and came to replace the less coss effective magnetic-core memory. -
Microprocessor
Intel introduces the first commercially available microprocessor, the Intel 4004. Before microprocessors, computers were built using circuit boards with integrated circuits. A microprocessor incorporates the functions of a single processing unit on a single integrated circuit, greatly increasing the efficiency of processing power. The microprocessor was designed by Federico Faggin, Marcian Hoff, Stanley Mazor, and Masatoshi Shima -
Floppy Disks
Alan Shugart leads a team of IBM engineers to invent the floppy disk, a precursor to the flash drive. It allowed data to be shared amongst computers. -
Ethernet
Bob Metcalfe develops ethernet. Ethernet is a local area technology which allows for the connection of devices in close proximity. Without ethernet, data would have to be conveyed through a dial-up connection. Ethernet has truly revolutionized the way we use, consume, and send data. -
