    Creting comedy within silent films was a difficult task within the early era of cinema. Comedies were very reliant on burlesque and slapstick humour, as technology had not advanced yet to allow sound. Without dialogue or sound comedy had to be quite visual.

    The GardenerThe first comedy film was created by the Lumiere brothers. It was 49 seconds long and called The Gardener. It centred around a gardener being humiliated by a little boy, and then ends with the boy being chased. It contains slapstick humour through humilation, a chase and frantic movement.

    The ever so influential, and genius Charlie Chaplin came into the silent film era in 1914. He created comedy films based around the everyday events in life, and made the scenarios comdeic by adding minute disasters, and creating situations that escalated quickly.
    Chaplin's style of comedy was influential on the era, and the style of his comedy was the trend for the time period up to the 1930s.

    Comedy films in the 60s took a darker turn, and surreal comedy was in for film. Comedy films did not progress in logical orders, and contained several comedic events after another.

    Comedies began to vary even more, and there was transitioning in terms how comedies were presented. Most comedies now had a thick underlying plot, and would have snippets of different types of comedy streamed in to the plot.

    Comedies now vary as there are many different subgenres. The most popular include romantic comedies, comedy dramas, action comedies and dark comedies. There is a broader variety in types of comedy, as plotlines are often recycled, and in order to entertain to different audiences many styles of comedy are required.
