  • 1744 The1st children's bookstore

    John Newbery opened the first known bookstore that was published and sold books specifically for children.
  • Lewis Carroll's Alice's Wonderland Published

    The book was written simply for the pleasure of reading for children. There was no moral lesson as all books were during this time.
  • Child Labor Laws passed

    The first child labor laws were passed giving children the time to attend school. They would be able to learn how to read. With more children learning to read, the amount of children's books published increased. There was also an increase in charity and a public library system was put in place.
  • Macmillan publishing house was launched

    Macmillan Publishing House was launched and had a department devoted entirely to childrens books.
  • Development of modern Picture book

    Modern picture book began to develop in during the 1920's and went on through the 1960's
  • First women's children's book editors

    Helen Dean Fish and May Massee because the first women to become children's book editors.
  • John Newbery Award

    In 1922 the American Library Association established the John Newbery Award
  • The Book Horn Magazine

    The Book Horn Magazine was published by Bertha Mahony and Elinor Whitney
  • The Opening of a children's book department

    May Massee moved to open a children's book department which contributed to the blossoming of children's literature
  • Randolph Caldecott

    The Randolph Caldecott was created
  • Young Adult Genre

    The renaissance of young adult literature began
  • The Outsiders

    The outsiders was published for young adult readers
  • Children's Book Press is established

    Harriet Rohmer Devoted to the publication of Bilingual picture books
