Adelina’s History of Children’s Literature

  • John Newberry’s Bookstore

The first bookstore to specifically start publishing and selling to kids.
  • Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll

Previously children’s books focused on teaching lessons and good behaviors but this book was one of the first to introduce more imagination.
  • Peter Pan

Like Alice in Wonderland, a story full of imagination and about never growing up. Both these books were turned into Disney movies.
  • Macmillan Children’s Department

Macmillan, a publisher, dedicated a department to children’s literature, adding to the rise of children’s literature.
  • Charlotte’s Webb

A classic tale about a friendship between two unlikely animals. Fun fact this book has received controversy in certain districts due to the talking animals being seen as blasphemous.
  • A Wrinkle In Time

A science fiction tale with the message that love and good overcome evil.
  • Ashley Bryan

First African American woman to write and illustrate a book, was the winner of the Coretta Scott award
  • Children’s Book Press

Harriet Rohmer created the Children’s Book Press which published bilingual books, to represent the melting pot nature of the United States and give representation to those kids.
  • The Giver

This dystopian novel talks about the ability to make the right choices even if it means going against the crowd or government in this case. What we are told is not always right.
  • Harry Potter

A fantasy series that took the world by storm with a whole new realm full of magic and detail.
  • International Children’s Digital Library

Hundreds of digital books online and available for children all over the world.
  • Hunger Games

To end the timeline we have my favorite book/series of all time which is the Hunger Games series. This book shows the power in hope and fighting for what is right even when the odds aren’t in your favor.
