French Forces

French forces occupy Rio De Janerio harbour. Two years later in 1557, Portugal regains control and establishes the city of Rio De Janeiro.

Brazil's Independence

Brazil gains independence from Portugal. Pedro 1, the son of Portugal's King established Brazilian Empire. The people of Brazil celebrate Independence day each year on Sepetember 7th.

Slavery

Slavery was abolished in Brazil in 1888. It was the last country in the Western World to abolish slavery.

Brazil becomes a republic

Brazil became a republic with a president in 1889. The first president of Brazil was a man called Deodoro da Fonseca.

Brasilia

In 1960, Brasilia was chosen to replace Rio De Janerio as the capital of Brazil.

First woman President

Dilma Rousseff was elected Brazil's first woman president and is currently still President of Brazil.
