Dutch people land in Australia. They were the first Europeans to sail to Australia. They made one landing in the island country, were attacked, and abandoned further exploration of the country. -
British sail to Australia
With James cook as the captain, him and his fellow Brits sailed around Australia. He named the area he landed in New South Wales. Cook had ignored the Aborigines people who lived there prior & claimed the land for England.
The sailors had also mapped the Eastern Australian Tasmania. -
First Fleet
Brtisih ships known as the "First Fleet," had left England with convicts to establish a prison colony in Australia. -
Early Prison Settlement
British prisoners had settled in Australia. They had build a colony of mainly prisoners and marines and their families. -
New South Wales
1788-1832:
New South Wales was officially a prison colony that mainly consisted of convicts(British and Irish), guards(aka Marines), and the marines' families. 20% of the convicts were women.
The British had transported prisoners Australia up until 1868. By that time, many free immigrants were settling in Australia. -
Aborigines (1)
Remnants of the tribes in the settled areas were moved onto reserves. They were forbidden from teaching their children their people's language and customs. -
Port Arthur, Tasmania
1833-1850s:
Port Arthur was used as a prison for the hardest of the British and Irish convicts. There were the men who were secondary offenders. Port Arthur had some of the strictest security measures of the Brtish penal system.
Some say that men would commit murder, typically punished with death, just to escape the desolation of their life in the camp.
The Island of the Dead was used for all the people who died inside the prison camps. -

Separation was an official government policy which lasted for many decades with the Aborigines people. -
Commonwealth in Australia
The commonwealth of Australia was established. Melbourne served as the national capital until Canberra was completed in 1927 -
Immigration Restriction
The Immigration Restriction Act of 1901 was passed. The act restricted migration of people primarily of European descent. The act was ended after WWII -

The federal government began to pass legislation to help the Aborigines people.
March- Aboriginal farmers changed political
history by extending a demand for equal wages to a
declaration of their rights of ownership of traditional lands. This became the first successful land claims by its indigenous people. -

Australia Act was passed. It stated that all legal ties with the British Empire were to be severed. -
