Leucippus
Credited for developing the theory of atomism -

Democritus
worked with Leucippus to develop the theory of atomism -
Antoine Lavoisier
Proposed the Law of Conservation of Mass. Helped get a better understanding of the atom. -
John Dalton
Determined that elements exist as packs of matter. Also helped form of understanding on atoms. -
Joseph John Thompson
Took the research further with the cathode ray and came across the mass of a "particle" which was lighter than a hydrogen. This lead to an idea of the mass of an atom. -
Earnest Rutherford
He discovered the position of the nucleus in an atom. This helped further the understanding of what is in an atom. -
Niels Bohr
Developed the Bohr model which told the position of the protons in the atom. This gave more insight of what is in an atom. -
Werner Hisenberg
He discovered that it is impossible to know the exact position of any subatomic particle. He knocked out any previous theories. He also developed the quantum theory which gave a btter understanding of atoms.
