History Of Atom Timeline

  • 460 BCE

    Democritus

    Democritus
    460 BCE-Birth
    370BCE-Death
He suggested the existence of atoms. He used the word atoms that translates to (indivisible) in greek, and put that into a theory. His theory is that everything in the universe is made up of atoms and atoms are microscopic and indestructible.
  • John Dalton

    John Dalton
    Sept 6th 1766-Birth
    July 27th 1844-Death
He came up with the atomic theory,
Everything is composed of atoms, which are the indivisible building blocks of matter and cannot be destroyed. All atoms of an element are identical. The atoms of different elements vary in size and mass. Compounds are produced through different whole-number combinations of atoms. A chemical reaction results in the rearrangement of atoms in the reactant and product compounds.
  • Dmitri Mendeleev

    Dmitri Mendeleev
    February 8, 1834-Birth
    February 2, 1907-Death
He created the periodic table and were all the elements went in the table
  • Eugene Goldstein

    Eugene Goldstein
    September 5, 1850-Birth
    December 25, 1930-Death.
He investigated the discharge tubes, and the discovery of anode rays, he's also sometimes credited with the discovery of the proton.
  • J.J Thomson

    J.J Thomson
    December 18th, 1856-Birth
    August 30th 1940-Death.
He was a English Physicist, Who had a nobel laureate in Physics, He was the person credited with the discovery and identification of the electron. He also discovered the first subatomic particle
  • Max Planck

    Max Planck
    April 23, 1858-Birth
    October 4, 1947-Death.
He used a mathematical equation to calculate the amount of energy and light that is emitted from bohr's theory.
  • Robert Millikan

    Robert Millikan
    March 22, 1868-Birth
    December 19, 1953-Death.
Element charge. He was able to calculate the mass and charge of an atom
  • Ernest Rutherford

    Ernest Rutherford
    August 30th 1871-Birth
    October 19th 1937-Death.
He is known as the father of nuclear physics. Rutherford overturned Thomson's theory that it's a solid sphere. He also demonstrated that atoms have a tiny but heavy nucleus. He used the Gold foil experiment.
  • Niels Bohr

    Niels Bohr
    October 7, 1885-Birth
    November 18, 1962-Death.
Electrons should move around the nucleus but only in certain orbits. When jumping from one orbit to another with lower energy, a light quantum is emitted.
  • Erwin Schrodinger

    Erwin Schrodinger
    August 12, 1887-Birth
    January 4, 1961-Death
He continued with Niels bohr's atom model and took it one step further. He used a mathematical equation to describe the likelihood of finding an electron in a certain position. This is called the Quantum mechanical model of the atom.
  • James Chadwick

    James Chadwick
    October 20, 1891-Birth
    July 24, 1974-Death.
He won a nobel prize for the discovery of the neutron. He also Put positively charged nucleus around negatively charged electrons and created an unknown radiation.
  • Werner Heisenberg

    Werner Heisenberg
    December 5, 1901-Birth
    February 1, 1976-Death.
Discovered a way to formulate quantum mechanics in terms of matrices
