Thaumatrope - 1824
A machine to see a combined image (Persistence of vision) A disk with a picture on each side is attached to two pieces of string. When the strings are twirled quickly between the fingers the two pictures appear to blend into one due to the persistence of vision providing an illusion of motion providing entertainment in the early animation age

Phenakistoscope - 1831

Zoetrope - 1834
Made images appear as if they were in motion, or in the act in rapid speed, by a hollowed drum on long interchangeable strips that spin in a fast motion to make it appear and have the illusion of motion. Made by William George Horner in 1833

Flip Book - 1868

Praxinoscope - 1877
The praxinoscope was invented in France on 1877 by Charles-Emile Reynaud and it was the first prototype to show an animated cartoons in animation. It worked by it having a middle cylinder and a strip of paper showing 12 frames of animation and as it rotated, it would show a single object in motion.

Humorous phases of funny faces - 1906
This stop motion animation was created by James Stuart Blackton in 1906 and was a very important part in animation's history in that it was the first animated film recorded on standard picture film. The film was a bunch of chalk drawings displayed and it uses stop motion frame by frame to appear they are moving.

Fantasmagorie - 1908
This production is argued to be the first animated cartoon ever in animation's history. Made by Emile Cohl in France on 1908 with the use of traditional hand drawn techniques depicts a man and a clown that encounters many different objects that change in front of them.

Steamboat Willie - 1928
This black and white animation was made and produced by Walt Disney, Wilfred Jackson and Les Clark on November 18, 1928. This 7 min and 42 second animation was the first to debut Mickey and Minnie Mouse as they go on their adventure. This also boomed Walt's success with the hand drawn success.

Merrie Melodies - 1930-1931
In 1930 Warner Brothers Animation was created, establishing the Merrie Melodies series of animations created by Ken Harris(USA) during the "Golden Age of American Animation" Theses animations were hand drawn and featured Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and many more in Looney Tunes.

Snow White - 1938
This colorful movie was the first successful hand drawn animation in color. It featured Snow White and her seven dwarfs. This was created by Walt Disney and Ted Snears and debuted on January 13, 1938 in movie theaters in the USA.

Flintstones - 1960
This animation was the first animated series on prime time television. Created and released by Hanna-Barbara on September 30, 1960. The animation depicted a middle class stone age man and his family/friends and their day to day adventures with the technique of hand drawing and frame by frame.

Yogi Bear - 1961
This animated character acquired his own show in 1961, however made his character debut in 1958. His show and character was created by William Hana and Joseph Barbara in 1961. His animated cartoon involved a series of drawings in sequence and as well as having the method of drawing a collar on him. The plot was his day to day adventures.
