  • Mahammed Daoud Khang was Overthrown

    The communist Peoples Democratic Pary of Afghanistan overthrew the Mohammed Daoud Khang government . General Dauod was killed in a pro-soviet cup. The peoples Demoratic Party came into power. This resulted in the seperation of church and state, more rights for women, and improved workers rights.
  • Nur Muhammad Taraki becomes president of Afghanistan

    Nur Muhammad Taraki becomes president of Afghanistan
    After the death of president Mohammed Daoud Khan Taraski, a member of the Afgan communist party comes to power and signs a friendship treaty with the Soviet Union. He brings back the tradtional ethnic and religious views that the resistance, PDPA, tried to dismantle.
  • Rebellion in Nuristan Province

    The rebellion was an uprising against the socialist reform put in place by the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan. It resulted in 25,000 deaths and lasted for a week.
  • Nur Muhammad Taraki is killed

    Taraki is murdered by the Amin, the opposition, only a year after becoming president. Amin announces that Taraki died due to a medical complication and declares Afghanistans independence from the USSR. At this point Amin is the leader of Afghanistan.
  • Soviet Army Occupies Afghanistan

    Soviet Army Occupies Afghanistan
    Soviet Union begins a ten year occupation in Afghanistan and begins by killing Amin. The soviet union sets up a harsh communist goverment. The USRR back the Afghan army which falls from 100,000 men to 30,000 due to the resistance or the mujahideen.
  • Babrak Karmal becomes ruler

    Babrak Karmal becomes ruler
    Karmal becomes leader and is backed by the Soviets during the peak of the resistance, He attempts to weaken the resitance as the new head of the PDPA. Mlore problems grow between Mujahideen groups fighting against the soviet union forces. Many other countries proveide money and soldiers to the Mujahideen.
  • CIA begins to fund the resistance

    CIA begins to fund the resistance
    The US government funds the Afghan resitstance by sending money to Pakistan to be distributed to the many resistance group fighting the USRR.
  • A New Alliance is formed

    Mujahideen people come together with pakisatan to create a alliance agaisnst the Soviet Union. Now half of the Afghan population is gone because of the war. Many of them fled to nearby countries like Pakistan or Iran to escape the war and curlety.
  • US provides missels to shoot down Soviet Helicopters

    US provides missels to shoot down Soviet Helicopters
    The US introduces stinger missles to combat the Soviet Army. These were used to shoot down helicopters and to destroy Soviet headquarters as well as Soviet backed Afghan government offices and headquarters.
  • Soviets sign the Geneva Accords

    These documents were signed by the US, USRR, and Afghanistan at the Geneva Conference and agreed that the Soviet Union would withdraw occupation from Afghanistan.
  • Soviet Army Withdraws Occupation

    After 10 years the Soviet Union finally withdraws from Afghanistan. The occupation resulted in several civil wars, political and social upheaval, and countless deaths. Afghanistan when through many changes of power as the government alternated between the resistance and the Societ Union.
