    Industrial Revolution

    New inventions and discoveries changed the U.S. economy. Our country's ecomony slowly thransformed from agricultural to industrial. A couple of importantant inventions were: the Cotton Gin, Steel Plow, Interchangeable Parts, Railroads, Steamboats, and the Telegraph. Those are just a few of the many inventions that changed our country's economy completely.

    The Irish brought this celebration to America.

    Education Reform Movement

    Horace Mann played an important role in the Education Reform Movement. He wanted schools to focus less on religion, and have grade levels/divisions instead of all the kids in one class. He also opened the first public high school.

    Temperance Reform Movement

    Women believed that alcohol was not good. They argued that it caused poverty, crime, and the break up of families. The movement started in the 1820s. In 1851, the state of Maine passed a law banning the manufacturing and selling of alcohol. This was a major victory.

    German Impact on American Culture

    Germans brought the Christmas Tree to America. Later on, their St. Nick turned into modern day Santa Claus. Easter eggs and easter bunnies were also introduced to America by the Germans. They also brought the now famous hot dog to America.

    The goal of this reform movement was to end segregation. It didn't exactly work since it led to the Civil War.

    The idea of Manisfest Destiny became popular, causing more and more people to move west.

    Irish Immigration

    The Potato Famine of the 1840's was caused by the failure of the potato crop in Germany. This caused many Irish people to flee to america in order to survive. They occupied most port cities, especially Boston.

    Prison Reform Movement

    One day, Dorothe Dix decided to teach Sunday School at a prison. What she saw was shocking. The mentally ill were treated with punishments instead of treatment. Prisons were in horrible condition-people in chains were locked in cages. Kids who commited small crimes would be put with the adults who had commited worse crimes. People in debtor's prison usually owed less than $20. Shocked by what she saw, she visited other prisons, and collected data for two years. She fought for justice in prisons.

    Women's Rights Reform Movement

    Most women got tired of being stuck at home, and being responsible for looking after kids, keeping the house neat, and cooking. Women fought for their rights, the most known being their fight for Women Suffrage. Women used the preamble of the constitution in their arguments. The preamble stated that "all men and women are created equal".

    The Revolution of 1848 failed in creating a democracy, causing many Germans to move to America.

    Chinese Immigration

    There were push and pull factors that caused the Chinese to immigrate to the U.S. The main push factor were the unsstable conditions in China. The biggest pull factor was the California Gold Rush. The Chinese also played a major role in the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad.

    Labor Reform Movement

    Workers and business owners argued over working conditions and wages. Riots occured in response to wage cuts due to financial depression. The goverment took action in oredr to restore order. There were federal troops. The public started to approve of the governments strong hold.
