U.S.S. Maine
No one knows why the Maine exploded but when the paper said the Spanish were to blame it made things in Cuba very touchy. Thus The war with Spain breaks out because we used Yellow Journalism to make it look bigger then it actually might have been -
Hawaii Annexation
Hawaii's Annexation was big because America said it wasn't an imperialistic nation yet it took in Hawaii after conquering it. Alaska was another example of the United states showing imperialistic traits. We wanted to be a part of "the big dogs" even though we said we weren't imperialistic. -
Treaty of Paris
During the meetng in Pais Spain freed Cuba and turned over the islands of Guam and Puerto Rico to the U.S. Spain also sold the phillipines for 20 million dollars. Which sparked a great debate on whether we had the the right to annex them or not. -
The Platt Amendment
It stated that Cuba could not make treaties that might limit it's independence or permit a foriegn power to control any part of its territory. The U.S. could intervene in Cuba. and Cuba couldn't go in debt. These "sgreements" made relations with Cuba bitter from then on out. -
McKinley assassination
Leon Czolgosz assassinated McKinley at a meet the public event. After his passing Theodore Roosevelt took over as president. I'm not saying his death was good, but Teddy was one of the best presidents. -
The Jungle
Upton Sinclair wrote and published The Jungle. It was about the real conditions of working in the meat packing plants and industries. The working conditions were aweful and helped pave the way for better conditions in the working places -
Pure Food and Drug Act
The Pure Food and Drug act halted the sale of contaminated foods and medicines and called for truthful labels. It didn't stop harmful products outright, but by using truthful labels it gave the accurate information for people to act wisley -
Payne-Aldrich Tariff
It was a compromise that only moderated the high rates of the Aldrich bill. Which angered progressives who beleived Taft had abandoned Progressivism and went back on what Roosevelt believed he would do. This would lead to a democratic win in the next election. -
The Panama Canal
The Panama canal was one of the Worlds greatest engineering feats. When completed it would prove to be a very useful asset to the world. Connecting two oceans with one canal. It's news was overshadowed of course by the start of the WW1. -
Federal Reserve System
The Federal Reserve Act divided the nation into 12 districts and established a regional central bank in each district. Federal reserve banks were able to issue new paper money in emergency situations. Federal reserve banks could transfer funds to banks in trouble, saving peoples life savings. By 1923 roughly 70 percent of the nations banking resources were part of the Federal Reserve System. It made it so there was one main bank so if a local bank was failing it could bail it out. -
Zimmerman Note
The Zimmermann note was a telegram from the German foriegn minister to Mexico but it was intercepted by Britain. The telegram proposed an allaince between mexico and Germany against the allies. Mexico would have to start a war with America. Britain intercepted the note 9 months before and told America when it would get the most bang for it's buck -
Fourteen Points
Wilson's now famous 14 points speech encompassed war aims as forwarded by wilson and a general guidline for a post war order. There were a total 14 different points. (Obviously) The first five were issues that wilson believed had to be addressed to prevent another war. The next eight dealt with boundary changes. And the 14th point disscussed The League of Nations They were so important because he was the only Big four to not want land or money. Just world peace -
Prohibition
Prohibition was the banning of Alcoholic beverages. Prohibitionists felt alcohol was undermining american morals so they got the 18th amendment to go into affect. It was an important and good idea because it was done to improve the American morals but lots of people still bootlegged and consumed them. -
Treaty of Versailles
The treaty of Versailles established nine new nations including Poland, Chechoslovakia, and Yugoslavia and shifted the boundaries of other nations. The treaty also barred Germany from maintaining a military, made them return land to France, and made them pay 33 billion dollars in war reparations. The treaty was supposed to establish peace, but with the treatment of Germany it's ability to do that weakend dramatically. -
Womens Suffrage
Womens Suffrage finally ratified in the 19th amendment. of course major contributors to the cause like Susan B. Anthony died before it was passed. People like anthony founded other organizations like the NWSA and the NAWSA which helped make Womens suffrage an important issue
