The compromise of 1850
During the compromise of 1850, they extended the original 1793 fugitive slave act. This made law enforcement required to arrest anyone thought of escaping enslavement. If they found the slave to be a fugitive then they’d be rewarded ten dollars. Henry Clay was known as “The Great Compromiser” using his spot as Secretary of State to save the government from desolation. This led to the civil war by putting slave owners against slaves in ideology and face to face right controls. -
Kansas- Nebraska Act
Senator Stephan Douglas of Illinois gave a bill to be one of the most important bills. This bill outlawed slavers above the 36 30 latitude in the Louisiana territories. Anti slavery supporters were very enraged because they were between slave and free states. When the act was passed pro slavery and anti slavery settlers rushed to Kansas, to determine the results of the first election after the law went into effect. This conflict turned violent being called bleeding Kansas. -
Bleeding Kansas
This led to the civil war by Kansans engaging in a violent guerrilla war between pro-slavery and anti-slavery forces. In May, congress passed the Kansas- Nebraska Act which formally organized the territory and opened space up to settlers. Free state and slave state proponents rushed to Kansas to try to stake their claim in their efforts to either legalize or prohibit slavery there. This ended in a Guerrilla war between both parties slavery would be prohibited in the Kansas territory. -
Preston brooks vs Charles summer
Shortly after the Senate had adjourned for the day, Brooks entered the old chamber, where he found Sumner busily attaching his postal frank to copies of his "Crime Against Kansas" speech. Moving quickly, Brooks slammed his metal-topped cane onto the unsuspecting Sumner's head. However, by beating Sumner rather than challenging him to a duel, Brooks was implying that his opponent was not a gentleman worthy of respect. Dred Scott v. Sandford
the U.S. Supreme Court stated that enslaved people were not citizens of the United States and, therefore, could not expect any protection from the federal government or the courts. the United States Supreme Court upheld slavery in United States territories, denied the legality of black citizenship in America, and declared the Missouri Compromise to be unconstitutional. This help us be pushed towards civil war because they’re once again making an enemy against opinions. -
Lincoln Douglas debates
Although Lincoln lost the election, these debates launched him into national prominence which eventually led to his election as President of the United States. Lincoln and Douglas agreed to debate in seven of the nine Illinois Congressional Districts; the seven where Douglas had not already spoken. This led us into the civil war by giving us more separation but also giving us our leader during the time. -
John Brown’s raid on Harper’s ferry
John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry was an effort by abolitionist John Brown, from October 16 to 18, 1859, to initiate a slave revolt in Southern states by taking over the United States arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia. Many Northerners condemned Brown's actions but thought him right in his conviction that slavery had to end. Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry and his execution further polarized North and South and made a resolution of the slavery issue the center of national debate. -
Election of Abraham Lincoln
Lincoln vs Douglas. The main issue of the election was slavery and states’ rights. Lincoln emerged victorious and became the 16th President of the United States during a national crisis that would tear states and families apart and test Lincoln’s leadership and resolve: The Civil War. This is very important because Abraham Lincoln will be our president during the civil war and he will help us stop and separate the war controlling the problems.
