Horace Mann
Mann was the first appointed secretary of education and known as "The Father of American Education." His vision was that schools would be the "great equalizer" and his decisions seemingly revolutionized education of that time. -
Brown vs. Board of Education
The Supreme Court realized that segregated schools was unjust and that it was not creating students to be contributing members of a democratic society. This court ruling made the first steps at desegregated schools -
Public Law 94-142 (IDEA)
This gave students with disabilities greater access to education. Until this law came about, most children with disabilities did not receive appropriate education/educational services. -
No Child Left Behind Act
The act's mission was to reduce the achievement gap in schools. It was viewed as a strict accountability system in seeing students succeed.
