    This law was extremely important because it was the first time that the public would choose and create a public educator in their towns to help educate the children. This was the first time the concept of an organized education system for the public was conceptualized.
  • First Public School in Boston - 1821

    First Public School in Boston - 1821
    As the first high school was created to prepare young men for life in a profession, at no cost to them, this was a huge stepping stone to free public school (122). This is important to shaping modern day k-12 education because it was time it was recognized that free school would be beneficial to the community. This new way of thinking paved the way for our current free public school system for k-12.

    These principles were extremely important to shaping modern day k-12 because they created the diverse curricular opportunities of study that we have in our schools today. These principles are imperative because it introduced the idea of the importance of all students having a basic understanding of general education, and unified education, in an effort to promote the common knowledge and shared values needed for them to become responsible members of our democracy (142).

    This is important to the history of education because it marks when the "separate but equal" law was declared unconstitutional and impossible, which was an incredibly important step to the progress of equality in the school system that we see today (151). We still have a long way to go for school's becoming equal, but this an imperative step to creating an equal school system.

    Education for all Handicapped Children Act
    This act is important to creating the school system we have today because it helped create an improved system for handicapped children ages 3-12 by giving them individualized education programs and specialized services to help them learn. This changed the school system by providing the opportunity to improve the lives of handicapped individuals by giving them a chance at a good education to help their futures (159).
