Historical Timeline for Students with Exceptionalities

  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Brown a parent of a black child who was denied to attend an all white school in Topeka, Kansas. The parents wanted the child to be able to attend the school for a better education. The school board did not want the child to be able to attend due to the color of her skin. The laws at this time had whites and blacks separated. The Browns won this case and the child was allowed to attend the whites only school.

    This case played a major role in helping children with disabilities in education. This landmark case even though it was a child of color being able to attend a whites only school open the eyes of parents of children with disabilities.   • Board of Education v. Rowley

    Amy Rowley's parents wanted her to have an interpreter due to her hearing issues. It was put in her IEP and the did not provided one. Amy was doing better than her peers with hearing aides This case went back and forth with each siding winning then appeals would come. It is a landmark case due to the changes that had been made to IDEA Law.
  • Board of Education v. Rowley Cont.

    This verdict was that the schools had to make sure that students with disabilities are able be successful in the classroom. They do not have to maximize this success by adding more.   • Honig v. Doe

    This landmark case was about a 17 year-old boy that was suspended from school due to behavior. The grandparents did not feel a student with behaviors that are related to their disabilities should be able to be suspended. The school disagreed with the grandparents.   • Timothy W. v. Rochester, New Hampshire, School District

    This case the parents wanted the child to be able to attend school. The school said due to the students sever disabilities he would not benefit. This landmark case end with the Education for All Handicapped Children Act (EAHCA). This is now know as the IDEA Law.   • The American with Disability Act (ADA)

    This law prohibits Americans with disabilities to discriminated against. That means a boss cannot fire someone because they are in a wheel chair. Students with disabilities could not be discriminated against due to their disabilities.   • Individuals With Disabilities Education Act

    IDEA is the reason why children with disabilities are able to attend schools. This allows a plan to be put into place for each student to get the best possible education in the least restrictive environment. This law was previously named The Education for all Handicapped Children’s Act. In 2004 was when an amendment was made and the name changed. It has been updated through out the years to fit the needs of all children.
