First Public School Opens
The first public high school opened in Boston, Massachusetts in the year of 1821. Enrollment for this school had 770 students for the grades of 9th through 12th. It was originally created to education working-class schoolboys in preparation for business, mechanics, and engineering trades. -
Birth of Teachers' Union
This was created to help teachers stand united together. It first started with 100 members. Today, it is known as National Education Association with over 3.2 million members. -
Plessy v. Ferguson
It was argued on April 18th, 1896. It was finally decided on May 18th, 1896. It upheld the constitutionality of racial segregation laws for public facilities as long as the segregated facilities were equal in equality. The phrase "separate but equal" was a huge factor of this case. -
National School Lunch Act
This act provided low-cost or free school lunch meals to qualified students through subsidies to schools. It was signed into law by President Harry S. Truman in 1946. It entered the federal government into schools dietary programs on June 4th, 1946. -
Brown v. Board of Education
It was argued on December 9th, 1952. It was re-argued on December 8th, 1953. It was decided on May 17th, 1954.This case declared state laws establishing separate public schools for black and white students to be unconstitutional. The phrase "separate educational facilities are inherently unequal" came into effect. This case reversed the decision made for the Plessy v. Ferguson case.
