    In the Reformist Biennium,the left-wing parties won the elections and drafted a new constitution.Niceto Alcalá-Zamora was elected president of the Republic and he made some reforms.
    In the conservative biennium,the government was formed by the centrist Radical Republican Party.They halted the majority of the previous reforms,so there was an increase in strikes. It led to another election where the left-wing parties, united in an electoral coalition known as the Popular Front , won the elections.

To prevent this from happening, the Republicans launched an offensive known as the ‘Battle of the Ebro’. Finally, the insurgents advanced, took Catalonia in 1939 and entered Madrid with no resistence.
