    In the 1800s, a bet was made between a few people that at one point during a horses gallop, all four feet were off the ground. To prove this, on June 15th of 1878 they used 24 stereoscopic cameras to take pictures of a horse in motion. When the pictures developed, they realized all the pictures put together made a sort of film.
  • First Real Film

    First Real Film
    "Roundhay Garden Scene" is known as the first "real" film. It was made on October 14, 1888. The creator of the film's name is Louis Le Prince in Roundhay, Leeds, England.
  • Chronophotographic Camera

    William Friese-Greene had a chronophotographic camera and was issued the patent number 10131 on June 21, 1889. The chronophotographic camera was capable of taking up to 10 photographs per second. The chronophotographic camera used perforated celluloid film.
  • Kinetoscope

    Kinetoscope
    At the Chicago World's Fair, in 1893, Thomas Edison introduced the Kinetoscope. It was a cabinet, and inside was a continous loop of celluloid film. You were capable of seeing movies in this by looking through an eye-piece.
  • First Public Screening

    Jean Aime Le Roy presented the first public screening of a film on February 5, 1894. He displayed the "Marvellous Cinematograph" to business men in NYC. This all occured on his Birthday.
  • First Commercial Exhibition of Film

    Thomas Edison's Kinetoscope peep-show parlor displayed a commercial exhibition of film on April 14, 1894. This was the first commercial exhibition of film and is known to have opened up the door to much more in the film industry.
  • Nickelodeon's

    Nickelodeon's
    One of the first theatres made to project motion pictures (indoors) was called a Nickelodeon. These theatres were created in 1905 and were a big deal. The kids channel "Nickelodeon" did get their name from these theatres.
  • More Nickelodeon's

    More Nickelodeon's
    In 1907 Nickelodeon's had grown so much that there were 4,000 Nickelodeon theatres in places all around the United States.There were no sound in the movies played, so they had a pianist play music to fit the film. Nickelodeon's continued to grow.
  • Recognizing Actors

    In 1910 actors in movies started being credited. They had not been credited before so this was a big deal. This began to make "stars."
  • Expanding to California

    In 1913 movie companies began to expand to California. One reason was because they could get away from Thomas Edison. The second reason was because there was better scenery.
  • Film Expansion

    The film industry started to grow even more and expand in the 1920s. The U.S. produced an average of 800 films annually . This even more popularized actors.
  • Vitaphone

    Vitaphone
    The vitaphone added recorded sound to films. The Warner Bros. introduced this in 1926. This was big for the film industry and really progressed film.
