Film was based on a 25,000$ bet! The bet was on if all of a horse's feet are of the ground at the same time while galloping. Taking a sequence of pictures of a horse galloping the found that its feet did indeed all come off the ground at one time. -

Film Shootings
At first, film was only shot on the East Coast, the reason being, that was were it was originated from. It was changing because of two reasons making it difficult to shoot. The weather on the East Coast was not the best weather, it would not cooperate with the films. The other reason being, alot of light was needed because of the slow speed of the films. -
Peepwhole Kinetoscope
Thomas Edison Invented the Peepwhole Kinetoscope, which allowed people, one at a time, to view the motion pictures. He liked the idea of this technology because of the money he made from it. Became a major marketing miscalculation. -
Motion Picture illusion
After creating the illusion of motion pictures by putting a sequence of images together, devices being able to watch these small clips came about. All the devices of this time era were only able to capture the appeal of one person at a time. -
Lumiere Brothers
They created a projector which allowed an audience to view the motion pictures. They called their creation Cinematographe. They begin showing small 60 second clips in a Paris cafe for cash. -
Vaudeville
Vaudevilles, which is a little theatre of skits and music was becoming a popular activity.To get business even better, adding small motion picture films wasn't a bad idea. After a while the Vaudevilles expanded into Nickelodeon! -

Epic Edwin Porter
Edwin Porter, working for Thomas Edison, made the first U.S narrative film which was an epic for his time! The film lasted twelve minutes blowing all the other sixty seconds films out of the water. The movie also followed an actual storyline and had diffrent camera angles and what not. With fourteen scenes in the film, "The Great Train Robbery", was the longest film of its time. -
MPPC
Thomas Edison began a group called, "Motion Picture Patents Company" whose plan was to own everything in the motion pictures business. Others who tried to compete, MPPC raided them smashing their equipment and threating the company's employees. The created international competition for the film industry by created the standards of film making. -
Actors
MPPC did not like to show the actors names on the films because if the actors get big, they will be wanting more money. The West Coast thought diffrently and saw an opportunity to make more money with making some actors have a big name. This would make the audience recognize the actor and want to see more of his or her movies. -
Nickelodeon
Nickelodeons were a small theatre that couldnt even hold a hundred people in it. Showing two vaudeville acts and music, it was a fun place to be at the time. Now Nickelodeon is known for being a huge cartoon t.v. channel for kids all around the world. -
Big Shot Nickelodeon
By 1910, Nickelodeon was showing around 26 million people their videos every week! Seeing Nickelodeon's outbreak, people saw its potential for making big profits. Nickelodeon's number of views nearly doubled the 26 million people a week five short years later. -
West Coast Shooting
They began shooting in the West Coast because it was away from MMPC, thus safer and did not have to deal with all their patents and legal rights. Shooting by Mexico also made a quick escape route to safer land. In the west, there was better lighting which helped the films and their slow speeds.
