  • First Fleet

    First Fleet
    The First Fleet of 11 ships left Portsmouth in 1787 with 1480 people on board. Most were British, there were also African, American and French convicts. After a 3 month voyage the First Fleet arrived at Botany Bay on 24 January 1788.

  • Gold Rush

    The first gold rush in Australia began in May 1851 after miner Edward Hargraves said he discovered gold at a site he called Ophir. Edward had been to a California goldfield and had learned new gold mining trick witch was panning (wash gravel in a pan to separate out gold.)

    At the beginning of 1901, Queen Victoria wanted to be her own colony, and became a state in the Commonwealth of Australia. Between 1901 and 1927.
