Historical Events in Education

  • Committee of Fifteen

    Committee of Fifteen
When the National Education Association focused on expectations for education, this committee worked together to decide what curriculum should be in elementary schools. Instead of only being focused on subject-centered courses, it should incorporate a link to the arts as well. I believe this was a way to link students interest to the curriculum, which is an idea that has been used in the last century to engage students.
  • Factory Model Education

    Factory Model Education
Now I believe school must be more progressive but the introduction of the factory model helped shape schooling we see today. As students get older, they need educators to act a managers to oversee their education but it ideally is up to the student to learn and not only teacher to teach. It was a way to organize education by getting the most out of the facilities provided. It was a step towards recognizing the potential of schooling and this model is what most schools today are built around.
  • Brown v Board of Education

    Brown v Board of Education
This landmark decision moved the country forward in time. The realization that separate but equal did not mean equal was a turning point. Although it took years after this decision before minorities were treated with respect across the country, schools were starting to become equal opportunities for everyone in attendance. Although we see schools today struggling to provide every chance for students, this decision was a stepping stone to equalizing resources and improving academic outcomes.
  • No Child Left Behind

    No Child Left Behind
This act was signed as a way to ensure that the system was held accountable for students getting the chance to learn. By keeping tabs on children's education, it greatly impacted the effectiveness of teachers and the curriculum they taught. If a school did poorly, it may have meant failure and restructuring but it is a way to not let students fall through the cracks and do nothing just to get by. I think this act encouraged school attendance and participation in the success of students.
  • Virtual Education Introduction

    Virtual Education Introduction
Virtual Education took everyday schooling and added the ability to be up-to-date on all subjects. The use of the internet allows current events to play a bigger role in the classroom. Not only does this education enhance classroom, it also teaches children the tools they will need as technology becomes more and more necessary in life outside school. It also is a way to design programs individually to each student and let them work at their own pace.
