The National Organization for Women was founded by 28 women. Today its one of the largest organization with about 550,000 members. Their goal is to take action to bring about equality for all women. The NOW foundation works to stop discrimination and harassment in the workplace, schools, the justice system and other areas of society. -
First Superbowl is played
Yes, you heard first, Green Bay Packers have won the first ever SUPERBOWL!!! They had a score of 35 to 10. This game set the tone for the superbowl for ever. It was played at the Los Angeles Coliseum. They beat the Kansas City Chiefs. It was the first-ever world championship game of American football. This historic game was played before a sold-out crowd of 61,946 people. -
Martin Luther King, Jr. Assassinated
On this depressing day, Martin Luther King, Jr., an American leader of the African-American civil rights movement and Nobel Peace Prize winner was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee. He was only 39 years old. He was shot by James Earl Ray. Ray was sentenced to 99 years in prison. The government findings was that it was of conspiracy. -
First man to walk on the moon
Neil Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon. He was accompanied by Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins. He was on the Apollo 11. This accomplishment made the United States ahead of the Soviets in the Space Race. It also gave people around the world the hope of future space exploration. Armstrong was quoted as saying, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." They had a successful journey. -
Guyana beomes a Republic
On the joyous day in history, my parents home country of Guyana, it became a republic country. It cut all ties from the British. The governor general was replaced as head of state by a president. The Motto: One People, One Nation, One Destiny. Guyana gained Independence in 1966. Guyana was originally inhabited by Amerindians, then the Dutch, Britsh and French.
