Growth of spa towns/seaside resorts.
The Romans had figured out the benefits that spas have in the UK. They discovered the health benefits and Bath and Buxton became popular destinations to visit in the 1700s and 1800s as well as now. The natural mineral waters that came up from the ground appealed to them. Seaside resorts became popular as people also found benefits in the sea water. Places such as Brighton and Blackpool got increasingly popular. Travelling was expensive so people used steamboats. -
How railways help tourism to grow.
Railways have been around for a long time and travel on train is popular even now. Building railways started in 1830.
Railways all across countries connect cities with affordable prices getting people around. By the 1840s there were already around 51 million travellers a year. This is when travel agents started to organize trips to the seaside as rails went there. Around these times, workers were given holidays which allowed them to go on holidays. -

Vladimir was a Russian business man born in Moscow on the 23rd of May 1922. He co-founded the company the Horizon Holiday Group which created the first big holiday packages available with all inclusive holidays. He was the first to operate holidays by charter flight. -
The rise and fall of Holiday camps
In the 1930s, holiday camps started to get popular and it was aimed to the lower income families. Skegness was where Butlins was first opened by Billy Butlins in 1936. Billy was copied by 2 other individuals who also so opened holiday camps called Harry Warner and Fred Pontin. Holidays camps declined since the 1970s. Many tourists wanted to go to warmer places to see different things outside of the country and started to gravitate to holiday packages abroad by companies such as Thomas Cook. -
Changes in working time and leisure patterns.
The change in working times has changed drastically over the years. Most jobs will have 4 or more weeks with paid holidays. This act was issued back in 1938. Back in the 1950s, people tended to work 50 or more hours a week and now it's usually around 37 hours. This allows people to take time off and go on holiday. Many people live longer and happier because of this. -
Rise of budget airlines.
Air travel was only for the rich decades ago but since 1977, budget airlines have been increasingly popular. Ryan air and EasyJet have became more commonly used with airlines having competition making flights more affordable. Budget airlines tend to use regional airports as they are cheaper. These airports such as Bristol and Stansted are popular choices. This is because of bigger airports such as Gatwick, Luton and Heathrow being very expensive, but you can get budget airlines from there too. -
How the internet has changed the travel industry.
When the internet was not accessible, travel agents and travel houses were commonly used. With the internet, travellers can look at pictures, reviews, what's in the hotels and about the area they are going to which is useful as they can do it from the comfort of their home anytime. The internets birthday is 01/01/1983 and runs 24 hours a day. Nowadays 7 out of 10 people book holidays online without travel agents. There are a variety of holiday sites with various deals and airline tickets. -
Package travel regulations
Package travel arrangements have been made and laws regarding packaged holidays called the Package Travel and Linked Travel Arrangements 2018. If there is an issue with your accommodation, food or anything with the arrangements you paid for , it's the company that you boked it with that will be responsible. If the company doesn't sort the issue out, you can claim compensation though you must alert them quickly. -
