This painting depicts the harsh reality of industrialization on a large poor population. These people would travel between workhouses in search of a bed to sleep in and a bath, however with a slew of Poor Laws regulating the presence of this population, it became extremely difficult for these people to stay off the streets. By the early 1900s workhouses for the poor were abolished thoughout most of Europe. -

The Battle of Dunkirk resulted in massive destruction in France demonstrating the power of new military advancements, including bombs and airplanes. The level of destruction in France as a result of this battle is directly related to the high levels of industrialization that spread throughout all of Europe by this point.
