Jackson 5- I Want You Back
Throughout the whole video they are all in one room. There is no narrative as they are all singing and dancing along without moving scene and playing the instruments. The overall quality isn't that good because of the age of the video. Although is it live it is apparent that he is miming the song.
Furthermore Lastly there are people sat down watching them to make it seem more realistic. The whole scene also seems to try to be as realistic as possible although it has clearly been well practised. -
Village People- YMCA
From the 60's to the 70's the music videos has changed dramatically which is shown clearly in this music video. There is a more interesting scene as they are outside and the change scenes through the video. Similarly they are still miming the music and dancing but without the microphones. They isn't a narrative however they are relating there lyrics of there song to the surroundings. Also no one is shown to be seen playing a music instrument or watching them dance, this seems to be an anomaly. -
Toto- Africa
This music is very literal as the lyrics relate directly to the music video. The word Africa is seen a lot during the video on books, especially the one he is stood on and ton the map. which relate to what he is saying. Furthermore there is only two main scenes, one is where he is in the room with the woman. The other one is where is where he is playing the instruments with the rest of the people and miming the song lyrics. The main singer is in it and the musicians and only one other woman. -
Jocelyn Brown- Somebody Else's Guy
This video begins to show developments of editing techniques and a variety of locations being used as a city is being used again and a room. However the singing has been incorporated with instruments and this time with a band, the miming also continues. The camera quality has also improved. The tone of the music also relates to their body language. For example when all the music started the scenes became clearer and more people become present. There still seems to be no narrative, just dancing. -
Whitney Houston- I Wanna Dance With Somebody
The opening is similar to the 60's but more modern to fit in with this era- this time she is on a huge stage with lots of fans. The experiment of music videos is becoming more apparent due to the variation of black and white and colour and the advanced editing begins. This is also the first video that has other people in it that are just as present as the main singer. This finally has some basic narrative as you get to see her do a couple of scene of her acting about what she's singing about. -
Robin S- Show me Love
This is again similar to the lacking of narrative however there is a slight one with another person rather than the artist. There is also a similar trend with the stage and fans whilst the artist is singing. This carries on throughout the video and the editing and lighting is at a fast pace which gives it a party atmosphere. The artist is again lip syncing again with a microphone. The only visual difference is that other people who are not the artist are beginning to mime the song too. -
TLC- Waterfalls
This is the most advanced video so far as it has a clear narrative about what they are singing and other advanced features. They begin the video in places which haven't been seen before like on a plane. There are special effects on the artists like standing on the water. They are again lip syncing without microphones but are not on a stage. They do not have the main focus as a lot of the video is about the narrative of some people. Lastly the song is slightly delayed before the video starts. -
Destiny's Child- Say My Name
This video seems to be more simplified than the last couple. It continues with the lip syncing but has no narrative just the artists dancing. There is also some other people but the main focus is on the artists again. They also stick to three separate scenes and it continues throughout until the end when they end up somewhere different. The structure seems have become more basic but the quality of editing has improved and so has the quality of the picture and the lip syncing is very accurate. -
JoJo- Leave (Get Out)
The instruments are being used again but in short cuts and the main focus is on the narrative. This is the first time that the artist has been used as the main actor in the narrative as what she's singing about. As well as lip syncing in scenes she acts as well so there are many various scenes that she changes too throughout the video-it never returns to the same scene as the narrative continues. Finally instead of singing to the audiences like the older videos she sings directly to the camera. -
Jordan Sparks- No Air
To begin is has just an instrument playing on its own at the beginning without the song playing too. The actual song doesn't start straight away unlike the others before. The music video is beginning to look like an opening to a film due to the camera angles, the song not playing and the acting of the artists. Also she speaks to make it more realistic. The narrative seems to be a massive part in this video. The rest has the usual like even more advanced lip syncing and camera quality. -
Chris Brown- Don't Wake Me Up
This has the most scenes but far and editing and follows some narrative. The editing is quick and there are lots of cuts which match the pace of the music, this has only just started to work successfully for the last couple of years. Again the camera quality is greatly improved with more exotic locations and more interesting scenes which are improved by special effects to made to look realistic. The artist also plays the actor again with another person whilst miming the song accurately. -
Calvin Harris- This Is What You Came For
For the latest video of this era it starts off with a quick cut of something that you would see for an old video, similar to the oldest music video, this obviously was the intention to look old. However then it goes into a high camera quality and an exotic location again. Also the special effects are at there most highest quality and are used often to fit in with the pace of the music. However there is no narrative and the video seems to be very simplistic but using all the best technology.
