Japan agrees to the terms set by the potsdam conference, but requests to be able to keep the emperor as head of state. -

America suggests a compromise
The United States agree to let the emperor remain in office for ceremonial purposes only. Japan wavers. -

Japan takes too long to decide wether or not to accept America's compromise, and the United States resumes air raids on Japanese cities and towns. -

Leaflets containing America's reply to the Japanese (on August 12) are dropped onto Tokyo. -

The Japanese emperor makes a broadcasted announcement to the citizens of Japan, telling them of Japan's surrender. -
The end of WWII
