    Several groups of poets and musicians came together during the civil rights and black nationalist movement in Harlem NY. These spoken word gatherings are considered some of the earliest beginnings of hip hop.

    DJ Kool Herc
    Creditied for originating hip hop music in the 70's Kool Herc would invent a style called the break where he would take 2 turntables of the same record to extend parts that he thought were the most interested to the party. He would use this style at a block party at 1520 Sedgwick Ave turning the address into a hip hop mecca.

    The Furious Five's Kieth Cowboy and rapper DJ Lovebug Starski would use lines like "hip hop, hibbit, hibby dibby, hip hop you dont stop to get the crowd going during parties. and soon the term hip hop would become the name of this art style.

    Grandmaster Flash begins a style called mixing where he would blend 2 different song during the break. Meanwhile his apprentice DJ Grand Wizard Theodore would accidentally invent the scratch.

    DJ Afrika Bambattaa battles Disco King Mario
    At NY High School 123 Bambaataa would battle his mentor Disco King Mario in a DJ battle. DJ battles are still a major part of hip hop culture to this day.

    As the popularity of hip hop continued to grow so did the dance style break dancing. The most famous of crews is arguably the Rock Steady Crew founded by Crazy Legs and B-Boy Fresh.

    Zulu Nation
    Afrika Bambaataa would for the Universal Zulu Nation. This was a group of socially aware rappers, break dancers, MC's, and graffiti artist.
  • Taki 183

    Taki 183
    Taki 183 would tag his name across the city eventually earning him an interview with the New York Times. This would spawn hundreds across the city of New York to begin a major graffiti culture.
  • Sugar Hill Gang

    Sugar Hill Gang
    Sylvia Robinson assembles the Sugar Hill Gang. They would go on to record what is known as the first commercial rap recording with "Rappers Delight".
