Putnams early contributions to the scientific community were based on Functionalism more notably Machine functionalism. Machine Functionalism parallels between mental state and functional state of computer of that time. Deals with the human mental state and how these mental states are caused by actions within our backgrounds of our beliefs and desires from our life. This theory launched other notable theories such as "The Great Question of Realism".

Putnam over his lifetime edited and published numerous works that contributed to the world of Philosophical science. These works include over 36 articles in renowned journals, published two collections of papers. These papers were published by Harvard. Putnam was known for wildly swinging views throughout his lifetime. Most attribute this to his upbringing and the influence he received from his parents. Putnam also produced many influential contributors to the study of Philosophy and Mathamatics
