Montgomery Bus Boycott Ends
In 1955 Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to change seats in a bus in Montgomery, AL, a city wide boycott of the buses were held. It lasted 382 days, and it resulted in the integration of the Montgomery buses after a federal court found that segregation was unconstitutional. This boycott resulted in a huge increase of activism and many people would join the civil rights movement. -

Civil Rights Act of 1964 is Signed Into Law
On this day Lyndon B Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act into law. It outlaws discrimination based on race, religion, sex, color, and national origin. It ended Jim Crow and all of the related discriminatory laws. There would be several amendments in later years such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Act in 1972. -
Martin Luther King Jr is Killed
MLK Jr. was assassinated in Memphis TN. He was there in support of striking sanitation workers. -

New Permanent Home for Highlander
After being shutdown in 1961, Highlander Folk School occupied several different sites in the 1960s. They moved into a new site outside of Knoxville Tennessee in 1972 where they have been since.
