In New York CIty, 26 men were arrested in a gay bathhouse. 7 of these men were sentenced to time in prison, ranging from four to twenty years. -
Stonewall Riots
Members of the gay community violently fought back against the police. A police raid early in the morning on June 29th in the Stonewall in, an openly gay accepting inn, is considered to be the most important event leading to the gay liberation. -
Harvey Milk
Harvey Milk was the first openly gay politician. He was a city supervisor in California. Milk served almost 11 months in office and was responsible for passing a stringent gay rights ordinance for the city. He was assassinated on November 27, 1978. -
March On Washington for Gay Rights
75,000 and 125,000 gay men, lesbians, bisexual and transgender people and straight allies gathered together to demand equal civil rights. The gay movement was nationalized and mobilized. It did not give any more rights but it gave them a voice and got Washington to start thinking about gay rights. -
