It all started in 1893 When he took a special interest in combustion engines and created a small one cylinder engine on his kitchen table. His first car was a frame fitted with four Bicycle wheels and an engine. The car was completed June 1896

After he Resigned from Edison illuminating company and started Detroit Automobile company he made two race cars one them being called Sweepstakes he defeated Alexander winton at Grosse Point, Michigan on October 10, 1901
