    In New York, a deaf kindergartener was provided an interpreter for only two weeks. She used an FM wireless hearing aid and her ability to read lips to follow along in the classroom for the rest of the year. When she started first grade,her parents filed a lawsuit stating she was missing out on her education due to no interpreter. A judge said "free appropriate public education" needed to include instruction specifically designed for each student's handicap so the child could benefit from school
  • Florence County School Districts vs. Carter

    A disabled student's parents challenged the appropriateness of the IEP developed by the public school district. While they were challenging the school's "free appropriate public education", they enrolled her in a private school. The parents then wanted the school district to reimburse them. The school district argued the private school didn't meet the appropriate standard. The court ordered the school to reimburse the parents since the school was providing an inappropriate education.
  • Texas Education Agency New Plan After Texas Had Not Been Properly Education Children With Special Needs

    A 15 month federal investigation found that Texas was failing to properly educate children with special needs. It was found that the states was keeping their special education numbers low and teachers did not fully understand what is legally required to educate children with disabilities. In January 2018, US Dept of Education demands that Texas identify and provide special education services and find students who may have been denied evaluation in the past. Teachers must now be properly trained.
