    In the 1960’s The Mayo Clinic of Rochester, Mn was the first to adopt the use of the Electronic Health Record.The EHR was designed for various departments of a health system to share patient data. Widespread use EHR’s was a slow process due to cost and physician reluctancy. It wasn’t until the 1980’s that a majority of hospitals used some form of EHR.

    In the late 1970's hospital information systems started using online data communications technology. In 1971 Lockheed corporation created the first computerized physician ordering system, Eclipsys. A collaboration between Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard University created the Computer Stored Ambulatory Record(COSTAR). In 1972 The Regenstrief Institute in Indianapolis,In created the Regenstrief Medical Record System.

    In 1982,the First large scale Picture archiving system (PACS)installed in Kansas at the University of Kansas.The PACS system was created to provide storage for radiology imaging, quick access, and to be shared amounts multiple sites easily.

    PDA
    Personal Data Assistants (PDA) started appearing in hospitals to be used to capture data. PDA’s were created to store information as well as send and receive data and access the internet. This made it possible to transmit information, real-time research, medical student studies and daily clinical practice. Unfortunately, security risk was high and it was never proven to increase patient care levels.

    The Office of the National Coordinator for Healthcare Information Technology (ONC) was created by President George W. Bush to increase the use of EHR’s. The goals of ONC were to adopting EHR’s to inform physicians about their patients, share patient information more easily between providers,the implantation of personal medical records as well as telehealth and provide accessible information to the public.

    HITECH
    HITECH Act was signed in 2009 by President Barack Obama provided incentives to Providers to use EHR’s. The goal was to reduce medical mistakes and provide safe and efficient care to patients.
