Harriet tubman is born in dorchester county maryland and is named Araminta Ross she is the fifth of twelve slave children -
Harder work still
At age five or six she begins to work as a house servant taking care of babies. She is cruelly treated and must stay up all night watching the babies if she falls asleep she is whipped. She's later sent to work as a field hand. -
Injured
Tubman blocked a doorway to protect another field hand from an angry overseer. The overseer picked up and threw a two-pound weight at the field hand. It fell short, striking Tubman on the head. She never fully recovered from the blow, which subjected her to random sleep spells in which she would fall into thorughout her whole life -
Marriages
Around 1844 she married a free black named John Tubman and took his last name. She also changes her first name to harriet after her mother. When she escaped to freedom he refused to go with her and took a second wife. She later married Nelson Davis a former black union soldier. -
Escape
She makes a second attempt at escaping. This time without her brothers. She uses the underground railroad and the help of its conductors and she reaches pennsylvania and freedom after about 3 weeks. Return
Makes her first trip back into the south rescuing her sister and her sisters two children. After that she rescued her brother and two other men. -
The Fugitive Slave Act
The fugitive slave act is passed making it even harder to sneak slaves into freedom. The underground railroad shifts its focus from sending slaves to the north to sending them to Canada. Harriet is nearly captured several times. -

Life as a Conductor
Tubman returned to the South again at least 19 times rescuing at least 300 other slaves. She became known as the Moses of her people and never lost a passenger because of the clever tactics she used. she carried sedatives for babies and had a gun to threaten the passengers with if they wanted to turn back which would endanger the rest of them she would tell them "you'll live free or die" she became friends with former slave/abolitionist Frederick douglas -
Danger
Maryland plantation owners post a bounty of 40,000 dollars for her capture and the state of maryland itself posts a bounty of 12,000 dollars. -
John Brown
she met abolitonist john brown in Canada,he was a radical abolitionist, who had heard much about Harriet She worked closely with Brown and helped him recruit men for the raid on harpers ferry she apparently only missed the raid because of illness -
Civil War
Harriet Tubman volunteers as a nurse and cook for the union army. She uses plants and traditional methods to heal. She never succumbs to any of her patients illnesses -
Spying
Tubman worked with Colonel Montgomery as a scout. She put together a group of spies who kept Montgomery informed about slaves who might want to join the Union army. After she and her scouts had done the groundwork, she helped him organize the Combahee River Raid. The purpose of the raid was to harass confederate whites and rescue slaves who were freed under the EP. They were successful in shelling confederate outposts and gathering about 500 slaves. Almost all the freed slaves joined the army. -
The Thirteenth Amendment
the thirteenth amendment is passed freeing all slaves in the united states and Harriets job is finally done. -
Womens rights
In Harriets old age she joined the temperance movement and fought for womens rights. She made her home in Auburn a center for womens rights activity. -
The journey ends
Harriet dies at the age of 93 at the Harriet Tubman home for the aged. She is honored with a military burial.
