Hip-Hops first years
Hip-Hop Developed in the early 1970s with DJ Kool Herc sampling disco and funk records and mixing songs together on turntables at block partys in New York., soon followed by other Djs. -
Hardcore-Hip Hop
By the late 70s/early 80s, Djs had been using MC's for a good few years, and although they originally had been intended to introduce the DJ and speak or rhyme over the beat, they had become more of an impact and become more energetic and player a bigger role. The lyrical style and content was starting to change. -
Ice-T
Ice-T was one of the first hardcore hip-hop artists, releasing his first single “Cold winter madness” in 1982. It never gained mainstream popularity, but on the underground scene it was successful. His lyrics were detailed observation of street life and witnessing violence and crime. -
Run DMC
Run DMC are classed as the first Hardcore Hip hop group. Their first single, “Its like that” was released in 1983. The single was fairly successful, peaking at number 15 in the RnB charts.

RUN DMC Debut Album
The next successful hardcore hip hop tracks came in 1984 with the release of Run DMCs debut album. This had a number of successful songs which gained mainstream attention, such as “Jam-Master-Jay” and “Hard Times”. Their single from the album “Rock box” was a mixture of hip-hop and hard rock, which paved the way for RapRock in the early 1990’s -
Gangsta Rap
Gangsta Rap was starting to develop in the mid to late 80s, using most elements of hardcore hip-hop, but focusing more on violence and gangsta lifestyle, with the group N.W.A pioneering this. -
Hardcore Hip-Hop and Gangsta Rap
The early 90’s was dominated by hardcore hip hop and gangsta rap. There was not much that separated them - gang life, violence and drugs had become a key subject throughout the genres as a drug epidemic had swept America. -
Wu-Tang-Clan
Wu-Tang Clan were a major part of the 90s hardcore hip hop scene, with extremely energetic fast flowing music. Their first single "Protect ya neck" in 1993 gained immediate success in the underground scene. After not long they had released their debut album "Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)" which turned out to be one of the most famous hip-hop album, the best, according to many people. -
Tupac v Biggie Smalls
Tupac and Biggie Smalls had also started to become popular at this time, the mid-90s saw a feud between them. The Decline of Hardcore Hip Hop
In the early 2000s we saw a decline in Hardcore Hip hop, with artists such as 50Cent and Ja Rule gaining the limelight with their dirty/porno rap. This sort of music was generally aimed at teenagers and was intended for night club usage.
