Radical Republicans
Radical Republicans wanted extreme change, they wanted slaves to be treated as people and wanted Confederate soldiers to get harsh treatment. They were a danger to reconstruction because they threatened the Democrats and had very strong views. -
1st, 2nd, & 3rd Reconstruction Acts
This law divided the south into 5 parts. Each part was 'governed'
by a military leader. The states had to meet three requirements before they were able to be readmitted to the Union. -
Johnson Impeached
Johnson tried to stop the first reconstruction act by firing the secretary of war, so the House of Representatives impeached him for breaking the Tenure of Office Act. -
14th Amendment Ratified
This amendment granted everyone born in the United States citizenship, including former slaves. -
Ulysses S. Grant Elected
Grant beat Johnson in the 1868 elections. He was very hated by Southern rebels because of his republican views. -
Sharecropping
Sharecropping is when someone that owns land rents a piece of their land to someone else and gets a percentage of the crops grown on the rented land. The landowner provides seeds and sometimes tool and the renter later repays the debt. -
15th Amendment Ratified
The 15th amendment guarenteed black men the right to vote. -
Enforcement Acts
These acts protected African Americans right to vote, be on a jury, hold office, and have equal rights. -
Amnesty Act of 1872
This act allowed many former Confederates to run for public office. -
