With the end of the Mexican War, America was ceded western territories. as these new territories would be admitted as states, They needed to no what would be free or slave states? Congress passed the Compromise of 1850 which basically made California free and allowed the people to pick in Utah and New Mexico. This ability of a state to decide whether it would allow slavery was called popular sovereignty. -
Fugitive Slave Act
The Fugitive Slave Act was passed part as the Compromise of 1850. This act was made so that if there was a run away slave, you could not help them you had to return them. This lead to the civil war because it forced northerners to return slaves to the south, for a reward, if they escaped. it angered the northerners because it practically allowed slavery into the free states and they didnt want to have to bring slaves back to their owners. -
Uncle Tom's Cabin Was Released
Uncle Tom's Cabin was written in 1852 by Harriet Beecher Stowe. Stowe was an abolitionist who wrote this book to show the how bad slavery was. This book, was a best seller at the time, and had a huge impact on the way that northerners viewed slavery. It helped further the cause of abolition, and Abraham Lincoln recognized that this bok was one of the events that led to the outbreak of the Civil War. -
Bleeding Kansas
The Kansas-Nebraska Act was passed allowing the Kansas and Nebraska territories to decide using popular sovereignty whether they wanted to be free or slave. By 1856, Kansas had become full of violence as pro- and anti-slavery forces fought over the state's future to the point where it was nicknamed 'Bleeding Kansas'. Bleeding kansas lead to the civil war because it was one of the first violent out breaks between two parties, the north and south. -
Charles Sumner is Attacked by Preston on the Floor of the Senate
The attack on Lawrence, Kansas basically lead to Charles Sumner being attacked by Preston after giving a speech about "...attacking the pro-slavery forces for the violence occurring in Kansas." -
Dred Scott Decision
Dred Scott Decision Dred Scott lost his case in a contreversial ruling, which futhered the cause of abolitionists. -
Lecompton
created allowing Kansas to be a slave state, but after much debate and opposition, "Kansas voters rejected the Constitution and Kansas became a free state." -
John Brown Raided Harper's Ferry
Jonh Brown lead seventeen men to Harper's Ferry, Virginia in hope to cause a slave uprising usuing the captured weapons. Later they got caught and all were hanged for treason. -
Abraham Lincoln Was Elected President
While Abraham Lincoln was running for Presidentry, 6 states including South Carolina said that they would brake off from the Union if he won causing Lincoln and the Republican Party to make it so that any states joining the Union could not be slave states.
