    The French
    The french now have control of the island up until the Haitian revolution.
  • Revolution and Independence 1791-1803

    Revolution and Independence 1791-1803
    The Haitian revolution occurred between 1791 to 1803. Later on in the year 1821, Haiti gains control over the entire island of Hispaniola until 1844.
  • Dominican Republic Independence Pt 1

    Hispaniola is divided, and the Dominican Republic gains its independence. Up until this point, the countries were previously controlled by two different European nations, Haiti by France and the Dominican Republic by Spain, thus up until this point they were separate and vastly different culturally.

  • The Parsley Massacre

    The Parsley Massacre
    In 1937 a newly instated dictator, President General Trujillo, ordered for Haitians residing among the “border line” on the land of the Dominican Republic directly across from Haiti to be massacred. Between 19,000-20,000 Haitians were murdered. This brought major attention to D.R. on part of the U.S. who called to sever relations between the two countries.

    Juan Bosch
    After Trujillo is assassinated, he is followed by Juan Bosch who is also very cruel towards Haitians and rules until 1965 when the U.S. invades.
  • Papa-Doc 1957-1952

    Papa-Doc 1957-1952
    Meanwhile, in Haiti, military dictator Francois “Papa-Doc” Duvalier declared himself ruler of Haiti for life. Under his leadership, many Haitians faced brutal realities being exiled or killed; and in 1972 is when the first boats with Haitians feeling Haiti arrived on the shores in Florida.

    For the next couple of years, the Haitian press is strictly confined by the government, and this repression leads to mass protest. Then in 1979, a powerful hurricane hit their island and devastated their economies and livelihood
  • Tough Political Time periods and Turmoil

    In the Dominican Republic over 200,000 people were left homeless and the economy was hit with 1 billion dollars of damages. By 1980, political relations were still very tense and corrupt.

    Massive protests are held in response to new immigration laws and policies that stripped Haitian Dominicans of Dominican citizenship.
