Uncle Tom's Cabin
Uncle Tom's Cabin was a book written by Harriet Beecher Stowe, a pro slavery activist. This book is believed to be a very key detail in the abolition of slavery. The novel highlights the wronging of slavery, this created a mix response between the country but overall created a very high rise in tensions between north and south which is considered a direct cause in civil war. -
Republican Party
Formed in 1854 by anti-slavists, former Whigs, and people that were upset about the overturning of the Missouri Compromise. The primary focus was to prevent slavery in other states, they create more conservative ideas. -
Kansas Nebraska Act
The Kansas Nebraska Act, introduced by Stephen Douglas, overturned the Missouri Compromise, which was that slavery was prohibited above a certain line in the U.S., which made tensions rise between the North and South because both sides moved in to sway vote and it resulted in conflict. This is believed to be a key cause of the Civil War and Lincoln's presidency. -
Bloody Kansas
Bloody Kansas was a time where there were many violent events in Kansas between pro slavery activists and anti-slavery activists during when Kansas was voting to decide whether it should be a free or slave state. this event was not quite a civil war but it was pretty close to such. -
Brooks-Sumner incident
The Brooks-Sumner incident was when sumner was putting up "crimes of Kansas" speeches, Brooks walked in and beat Sumner with his cane until it broke, on the senate floor, and Sumner suffered physical and emotional trauma for the rest of his life. -

Dred Scott
Dred Scott was a black man born in Virginia when his owner moved him to free states. when he came back to Missouri (slave state) they enslaved him and he tried to sue for his freedom. The courts voted 7-2 against Scott saying he was not a citizen so he could not sue. this decision infuriated the North and anti slavery supporters... which rose tensions even more before leading to the war. -
LeCompton Constitution
this was a contract that if signed with enough signatures it would make Kansas a pro-slavery, this created violent conflict. -
House Divided Speech
the House Divided Speech, given by Abraham Lincoln, was a speech that said that the country cannot survive with enslaved people and many people did not agree with this because it solidified his stance on the subject. -
Lincoln Douglas Debates
The Lincoln Douglas Debates were a series of 7 debates from Aug 21 to Oct 15, 1858. The debates were for the Illinois senate between Abraham Lincoln (republican) and Stephen A. Douglas (democrat). The main argument was over slavery and Douglas did not want it abolished but Lincoln pushed for abolition and equality amongst blacks. Douglas won. -
John Brown
John Brown was a white man who was against slavery. Brown wanted slaves to rebel against their masters. Brown was responsible for the Pottawatomie Massacre (5 pro slavery killed) as well as the Harpers' Ferry raid (17 killed). the Harpers' ferry raid led to him being tried for treason and hanged on December 2, 1859 -
Harpers' Ferry
The Harpers' Fairy Raid was one of many significant events that led to the Civil War. Led by John Brown and 21 others, they seized the armory and fought for two days before troops came in and stopped Brown and his surviving men. Brown and 6 others were tried for treason and charged, and were hanged before the end of 1859. this event caused many people to go to militant measures to achieve the abolition of slavery. -
Election 1860
the Election 1860 set the boundaries in states for political parties placing the north as republicans and the south as democrats. this election is what directly led to the civil war because it was when Lincoln was elected. -
Secession
the cause of succession was states not agreeing with one another on the topics of, slavery and abolition, rights, and Lincoln's election which was pushing for abolition. -
Lincoln's 1" lnaugural Address
Lincoln's union address was after several states had seceded and he told the people that he was basically shifting his focus from trying to abolish slavery, but instead try to strengthen the country because so many states started seceding because of the topic and conflict.
