The Louisiana purchase was the when Jefferson asked the French if they can buy New Orleans. Napoleon however needed money for his war so he sold them the entire Louisiana territory. This was a bit of a controversy because Jefferson was a democratic republican who believed in a sticked reading of the constitution where it didn’t mention anything about the president expanding our land. -
