Election of George Washington
:George Washington became the 1st president for the United states on February 4th, 1789. His presidency led to several great things. He was one of the greatest presidents that ever lived, congress had wanted him to run for president a third time. -
Bill of Rights added to the Constitution
They added the Bill of Rights to the constitution because it was an agreement to get all the states to ratify the Constitution. That’s why it only applied to the federal government and not the state governments. The state governments at that point could do whatever they wanted to do to you. It wasn't until the 14th amendment came along did the Bill of Rights really apply to the states. -
Whiskey Rebellion
Whiskey Rebellion- Farmers were very upset knowing George Washington had taxed whiskey. Since they had traditionally converted their excess grain into liquor. They all thought it was unfair. Many protest meetings were held, to make Washington stop. -
Election of John Adams
John Adams became the 2nd president of the United States. During his presidency Our government began to worry about subversion. So adams passed four laws, Naturalization Act, Alien Act, Alien Enemies Act, and Sedition Act. When Adams was in office, we signed a treaty with great britain encouraging trade. As a result the french attacked on US ships involved in trade with Great Britain. This is how the X, Y, Z affair -
X,Y, Z Affair
The French Foreign minister, Talleyrand, sent 3 men whose identities were kept secret. They’re known as X, Y, and Z. These men proposed that the US pay 250,000 to see Talleyrand. This brought about the saying “Millions for defense; not one can for tribute!” -
Alien Act
The main reason the Alien Act was put in motion was because all of the people coming into the U.S. from different countries. So they had passed the Alien act which required you to become a Citizen of the United States which took an extremely long time. Or if you were just visiting the United States, then you would need a particular form of identification called a passport. -
Sedition Act
It established the English common law of seditious libel, with some important changes. The new law accepted the idea of jury determination of sedition and also allowed truth to be considered in defense. The sedition acts were not that much different from the malicious and the political opinionation. -
Election of Thomas Jefferson
He was elected in 1800. Jefferson defeated adams, and became the 3rd president of the united states. Jefferson and Madison also regulated United states foreign trade during his presidency. -
Louisiana Purchase
Napoleon sold the US territory in order to finance his european wars. Jefferson sent lewis and clark to explore this territory in 1804. They were lead and helped by a young woman called sacagawea. Jefferson gladly accepted. -
Lewis and Clark Expedition
Lewis and Clark Expedition, 14 May 1804: The Lewis and Clark expedition was an expedition to the new land of Louisiana that America had recently bought. Thomas Jefferson sent two men (Lewis and Clark) to go discover the Land of Louisiana, So they went together, along with several other crew members that came along. This expedition led to many great discoveries in the future. -
Election of James Madison
: The election of James Madison in 1808 made him become the 4th president of the United States. James Madison was also one of the few founding fathers for the United States. Madison served two terms during his presidency. -
Non-Intercourse Act
The Non-Intercourse acts was a law passed in 1809 banning trade between America and the nations of France and Great Britain. It was designed to replace the Embargo act. But later they figured that it didn’t replace it at all so they stripped America of the Non-Intercourse act. -
War of 1812
The United States was not ready for war because Jefferson had reduced spending, and the navy only had 16 ships. The British began the impressments on the US sailors, this is forcing men into a navy. Which lead to making James Madison declare war on Great Britian. -
Election of James Monroe
Right after Madison was done with his presidency, James Monroe came in to become the 5th president of the United States. He is mostly famous for the Monroe Doctrine. The doctrine stated that if Europe decides to shoot down our trading ships, then we will strike back and go to war. -
Monroe Doctrine
The Monroe Doctrine stated that European nations should not intervene in countries to the south of the U.S. The Monroe Doctrine declared in December of 1823, was a superlative U.S. foreign policy statement. It was started by various independence movements in South America and the U.S. government's desire to discourage European nations from colonizing the Americas.
