    Maurice Hines is Gregory only sibling. He was born December 13, 1943 in New York, NY. Maurice was an American actor, director, singer, and choreographer. He was the older brother of dancer Gregory, him and Gregory first started dancing together and practiced tap dancing. Gregory parents are Maurice Hines Sr.,and Alma Hines.His dad was born February 9, 1922 in North Carolina, USA. He was an actor, known for The Cotton Club in 1984. His mom Alma Hines was born about 1915.

    He began dancing at the age three he turned professional at the age five, and for fifteen years he performed with his older brother Maurice. When Gregory moved back to New York City in the late 1970s he immediately landed a role in The Last Minstrel Show. A month later came Eubie in 1978 a certified Broadway hit which earned him the first of four Tony nominations. Hines was educated at the Willard Mace Elementary School for professional children and at Quintano's School for Young Professionals.

    Gregory died of liver cancer on August 9, 2003, en route to the hospital from his home in Los Angeles. He was diagnosed with the disease a year earlier, but informed only his closest friends. At the time of his death, production of the television show Little Bill was ending. Gregory secretly battled liver cancer for two years before he died, bravely hiding his life and death struggle from his friends and his cast mates on “Will & Grace.

    Teddy Hale influenced his acting career. He practically grew up backstage at the Apollo Theatre where they were witness to the performances and the advice of such tap dance legends as Charles "Honi" Coles, Howard "Sandman" Sims, the Nicholas Brothers, and Teddy Hale. Gregory and Maurice studied tap dance with master tap dancer Henry Le Tang. They became known as “The Hines Kids,” and they danced and performed at the Apollo Theater.
