Westside Elementary School in River Falls, Wisconson, collects 62,345 pennies to help students in Pakistan. Why pennies? The penny is one percent of a dollar, is usually worthless in the US, but in Pakistan and Afganistan, a penny buys a pencil, and empowers a child to read and write.

Greg and the Korphe villagers build the Braldu River bridge to Korphe. Before they built the bridge, there was just a zip-line and a box, only one person could fit in it at a time, and it only held a certian amount of weight. It was extremely dangerous.

Greg meets Tara Bishop in San Fransico. They get married six days later.

Greg returns to Pakistan and begins building the school.

Greg returns to US where him and his new wife Tara, spend Thanksgiving with Dr. Hoerni, and the Central Asia Institute.

Greg is back in Pakistan, and is starting on the construction of the Korphe school.

Greg and Tara's daughter, Amria Eliana Mortenson, is born at their home in Bozen, Montana.

Al Queda uses hijacked commerical passenger jets to bomb the World Trade towers in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and one plane crashed in Pennsylvania.

Greg finds out that Haji Ali has died. (He was one of the people that helped Greg build the Korphe school in Pakistan, and he also helped Greg build the bridge).

The United States and a military coalition of eighteen other countries invade Afganistan.

Greg returns to the United States.

Greg visits Afganistan, then Washington, D.C., where he meets with Representative Mary Bono.

Greg and the CAI starts building girls' schools in Afganistan. (The CAI stands for Central Asia Institute. Its a nonprofit organization that Greg cofounded that builds schools in Afganistan and Pakistan).

In the summer, Greg and CAI begin building schools in Badakshan province in northern Afganistan.

A massive earthquake in Azad Kashmir, Pakistan, kills over 74,000 people, including 18,000 students in schools, and destroys over 1,600 schools.

Greg visits areas of Pakistan affected by the earthquake, and starts building tent schools.

CAI and Greg start to build earthquake proof schools in Azad Kashmir.

Greg beings to visit schools, sharing how to promote peace through education with students. From 2006 to 2008 he travels to over 200 U.S cities and visits over 400 schools.
