Greek troops took Smyrna and a large portion of Anatonia

Jun 27, 1919

Greek soldiers barraged into Smyrna. Shortly after the Smyrna people began to protest. Prisoners were set free. A march killing thirty unarmed prisoners and 100 Greece people took place shortly before Smyrna was taken over by Greece.

Greco-Turkish war ends

Apr 20, 1923

The treaty of Lausanne is signed in July.

Monarchy abolished

Jan 1, 1924

Greece becomes a republic in 1924.

Second Hellenic Republic

Mar 12, 1924

The Second Hellenic Republic consisted of fourteen Prime Ministers. It lasted from 1924-1935

Pavlos Kountouriotis comes to power

Apr 20, 1924

Pavlos Kountouriotis becomes the first President of Greece.

Great Depression in Greece

Apr 19, 1932

Greece was hit by the depression in 1932. In attempt to end the depression in Greece taxes were raised and untaxed goods were taxed.

Kingdom Of Greece Restored

Nov 3, 1935

George II is restored to the throne. He took back over the throne in hopes of ending the Great Depression.

John Metaxas rises.

Apr 20, 1936

John Metaxas gains power and becomes dictator of Greece.

General Declares State Of Emergency

Aug 4, 1936

General Loannis Metaxes declares a state of emergency. In attempt to end the growing amount of riots he declares martial law and establishes a crisis cabinet.

WWI

Apr 20, 1939

The first World War begins, Greece remains neutral.
