GR Whitfield was founded by George Roscoe Whitfield and the school was previously known as Pitt County Training School.

In 1923, dormitories were built for the students at G.R. Whitfield. At the time, the school was the only one in Pitt County for people of color.

In the 1960s, the school was desegregated during the Civil Rights Movement.

In 1967, the school was renamed G.R. Whitfield School and eventually became a kindergarten through eighth-grade school.

In 2001, a new building was added to the campus. It includes the main office, library, and classrooms.
