Although golf was played before the 1500's a set of clubs were introduced around 1500. -

The Hairy Golf ball
From 1554 through 1618, the Scottish golfers were making hairy golf balls. -
Feathered Golf Ball
The First Feathered Golf Ball was made in 1618. It was made with goose or Chicken Feathers. When it was stuffed with feathers it became harder than the hairy golf ball. Thus making it able to fly further. -
The Emergence of iron club heads
The first iron golf heads were forged although they were very rare because of the delicacy of the Feathered golf balls which was the ball at the time. -
Hickory
Robert Forgan started to make club shafts out of hickory instead of the original ash and hazel wood, which clubs used to be made out of. -
Gutta/Guttie ball
The Guttie ball was invented by Dr. Robert Adams Paterson.They were very popular because of how cheap they were. -
Mass Produced Iron
In the 1870's with the new drop forging techniques factories were able to produce massive amounts iron club heads. -

The Haskel
It took a very long time to make the haskel golf ball and patent it. All the way from Coburn Haskel ,who invented it, to when Spalding finally released it. -
The Steel Shaft
The Steel shaft although was being made in 1925. The R&A, named from The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews which was the main governor of the game of golf. . -
Too Many Clubs
Up until 1939 the average golfer would carry 20-30 clubs in your bag. But because of the new steel shaft clubs the R&A limited your bag to only 14 clubs -

After world war two there were lots of technological improvements leading the new synthetic materials. Which in turn made more materials to make clubs out of. -

The Hybrid
The hybrid was a fusion between an iron and a wood.
