Going to War in Vietnam

  • The War started

    Japan Invaded Vietnam starting the War.
  • Japan surrendered

    Japan surrendered to the Allies making them give up control of Indochina.
  • Defeat at Dien Bien Phu

    Dien Bien Phu is a mountain town that French planned on cutting off their supply line. This made it so they had to fight. The Vietminh forces surrounded the town and then they bombarded the town. Soon after the French fell to Vietminh.
  • Troops landed in Lebanon

    Chamoun requested the American military to help in intervention stop. Lebanon was very close to turning into a dictatorship and that would lead to another world war. So we went over and helped them out so we would not have another world war.
  • U-2 spy plane shot down

    The United States had a plane going over the Soviet Union air space spying on them. The Soviet Union shot the plane down.
  • JFK sends helicopters

    JFK sent helicopters and 400 Green Berets to South Vietnam.
  • The U.S. gets a new President

    President Kennedy gets into office. Kennedy still supports South Vietnam making him send many more troops over to fight
  • JFK was killed

    He got assassinated in Dallas and then Lyndon B Johnson became president
  • The United States passed the Gulf of Tonkins

    The North Vietnamese torpedo two of the U.S. boats. Then less than 2 days later there was another attack. So to get back we fired on them. We also passed the Gulf of Tonkins which is "take all necessary measures to repel any armed attacks against the forces of United States and prevent further aggression".
  • United States combat land in Vietnam

    The United States sent over combat on March 8th, 1965 with support from American public. The military wanted more people over there to fight with them so they had 175,000 people sent over at the end of 1965.
