Glass Castle - Jeanette Walls Timeline - Important Life Events

  • Age 3

    One day Jeanette was cooking hot dogs and burned herself very badly. After she had been in the hospital for a while Rex came by one day and grabbed her and drove away because he couldn't pay the bills
  • Age 4

    when they were driving to las vegas Rex was driving drunk and when he took a sharp turn Jeanette flew out of the car but no one noticed. After a while, they finally came back to get her but the dad just kept making jokes about the situations and didn't seem sorry at all.
  • Age 5

    Jeanette's family moved to Blythe, California. She started going to school and was very excited to start learning but eventually started to get bullied because of that. One day she got beat up by a group of Mexican girls. the next day they tried to do it again but Brian was able to stop them.
  • Age 6

    When Rex lost his job the family started starving and the kids resorted to stealing out of other people's lunches at school to eat. Rex and Mary also got into huge fights and one time Mary tried to kill herself but Rex grabbed her.
  • Age 10

    Jeanette asked Rex to stop drinking and he actually listened. However, after a year he started again and lost his job.
  • Age 13

    The family moves to Welch despite Rex's opposition. When they get the kids meet Rex's parents(Erma and Ted) for the first time.the rules at Erma's house were very strict and even laughing wasn't allowed.
  • Age 14

    When Erma tries to molest Brian Lori and Jeanette fight back but both get punished by their parents. they stay in welch and buy a broken-down small house that doesn't even have plumbing. Jeanette and her siblings go through a very rough time because they are starving and Rex starts to drink more and more. This is also when Jeanette realizes that the Glass Castle will never be built.
  • Age 17

    After Jeanette finishes junior year of highschool she goes to New York to join her sister Lori. She starts going to college and eventually gets hired by one of the biggest magazine companies in the city.
  • Age 34

    Rex invites Jeanette over and tells her that he is going to die very soon. Even though he hadn't been the best parent, Jeanette was always close to her dad and is completely devastated. Two weeks after their visit, he dies from a heart attack. "Despite all the hell-raising and destruction and chaos he had created in our lives, I could not imagine what my life would be like without him in it. As awful as he could be, I always knew he loved me in a way no one else ever had"
